TRASH Society
Throwaway Culture
The throwaway society is a term coined by social critic Vance Packard in his 1960 book The Waste Makers.
In the book, Packard argues that the American economy has moved from producing goods that last to producing goods that are designed for obsolescence. Packard points out that this trend is not limited to the U.S., but can be seen in other developed nations as well. He argues that this trend is a result of the increased power of marketing and advertising and an increased focus on profits over quality.
Consumer Society
The throwaway society is a result of the consumer society, which is based on the idea that consumption equals happiness. Disposable products are made to be used and then thrown away. This has led to a society where people buy more and more cheap money, which in turn causes an increase in disposable products.
